First I think you should read his book, before being so quick to judge. I’m not forcing my opinions on everyone, but I think some people have biased views, particularly on Lewis because he is such a big target for bad press, and they see all the bad press and this is what they think of him. He’s not had an easy life - he’s not come from a family with some money like Seb or Mark. I think people should just have a sense for the journey has had to take to get into Formula One, and I think that can help you understand a little why he gets so frustrated when he does bad and so emotional when he does good.
To be honest, I think if he were a bad driver, he wouldn’t have the likes of Kamui and Jaime and Vitaly hailing him as one of the best ever - Jaime even called him his hero! Of all the people, he could have at least picked his fellow Spaniard, Fernando, as his hero, but no - he picked Lewis.
Secondly, I think people should just learn to be more magnanimous towards him, or towards anyone for that matter. Fair enough, you might not like him, but you can’t really call yourself a fan of the sport if you don’t respect good driving and hate parts of drivers. Lewis did a fucking brilliant drive today to topple the Bulls. So just say congratulations and be done with it. Stop moaning at him for smiling - as I said before, if you put yourself in his shoes, imagine you’ve lived his life and this bad season he’s been having - what emotions can you expect his to show other than numbness?
It’s no mean feat to take down Red Bull from pole, and he deserves congratulations. I, no matter who is on pole, make sure to congratulate them, because you have to give them respect for the good drive they did.
Every driver has good qualities and bad qualities. Contrary to popular belief, the sun does not shine out of Sebastians arse, and Fernando Alonso isn’t an asshole - Lewis Hamilton isn’t a spoilt, childish crashkid - he isn’t perfect either, no one is, but people should embrace the good qualities in every driver. You should make it your mission to find things about each driver your respect - I started a list of the 100 things I admire most about Fernando Alonso - no joke - I want to like him, and I think other people should want that want too - not only so you don’t have to go around disliking drivers, but so you can understand them and their style and their journey more - from the point of view as a fan of the sport, and just general interest. It gives everything a whole new level and depth, and makes the sport a much greater pleasure to watch!
Anyway, congratulations Lewis, you deserve that pole - you’ve been quick all weekend, so ride the emotions and take in the positive energy. Well done Sebastian - the McLaren’s were incredible this weekend and to split them is no easy feat. Well done Jenson, keeping up your brilliant drive last week and staying in the top three. Well done Felipe - officially faster than Fernando! And well done to Jaime - so close to Q1, but tomorrow looks good for you and Sebby!
